Conscious Capitalism at Henry S. Miller
There is a new philosophy being adopted by companies large and small called “Conscious Capitalism.” Ideally, capitalism is a system where individuals treat each other as independent equals through free, voluntary exchange for mutual benefit as opposed to forced redistribution. Capitalism has done more to empower people and raise the standard of living than any other force in human history.
Conscious Capitalism raises awareness of the benefits of capitalism and promotes serving all principal stakeholders in conjunction with the pursuit of profit. This Thanksgiving is a good time to examine the tenets of Conscious Capitalism and how we apply them at Henry S. Miller.
According to the website consciouscapitalism.org, a Conscious Business hinges on four principles, as follows:
“While making money is essential for the vitality and sustainability of a business, it is not the only or even the most important reason a business exists. Conscious businesses focus on their purpose beyond profit.” Henry S. Miller Company’s higher purpose is the health, happiness and harmony of every person associated with this organization. We want our employees and clients to be healthy financially and otherwise, so they can provide for loved ones and give back to the community. Employees should be happy at work and love what they do for a living; clients should be happy to work and invest with us. And finally, we want everyone connected with Henry S. Miller to live and work in harmony.
“Conscious businesses focus on their whole business ecosystem, creating and optimizing value for all of their stakeholders, understanding that strong and engaged stakeholders lead to a healthy, sustainable, resilient business.” Henry S. Miller’s stakeholders include clients, employees, investors, vendors and others. We strive to involve and support all of our stakeholders, knowing that doing so fortifies them and Henry S. Miller.
“A Conscious Culture fosters love, care, and inclusiveness and builds trust amongst the company’s team members and all its other stakeholders.” The corporate culture at Henry S. Miller is the expression of our most important values and principles: service and integrity.
“Conscious leaders focus on ‘we’ rather than ‘me.’” Our leadership team is dedicated to serving the company’s higher purpose, supporting our employees and creating value for and harmonizing the interests of all stakeholders.
Conscious Capitalism is Good for the World
The concluding sentence of the Conscious Capitalist Credo is, “Conscious businesses will help evolve our world so that billions of people can flourish, leading lives infused with passion, purpose, love and creativity; a world of freedom, harmony, prosperity, and compassion.”
For more than 100 years, Henry S. Miller Company has been providing clients with the best in commercial real estate services. But from the beginning, the mission has always been more than that. My great-grandfather, Henry S. Miller, Sr., was known as “God’s Businessman.” He made a point of treating everyone—clients, partners, employees and vendors—with respect, fairness and courtesy. That tradition was carried forward by my grandfather, Henry S. Miller, Jr., my father, Vance C. Miller, and now it’s up to me.
In our corner of the world, all of us at Henry S. Miller are committed to doing business in a way that has a positive impact. Yes, we endeavor to create wealth, but the blessing of having a higher purpose demands that we use wealth in a way that benefits our stakeholders physically and spiritually with health, happiness and harmony.
Our Thanksgiving prayer is that you also be blessed to know your higher purpose!
